How to configure Mac OS 8.0 to connect to the internet (manual)

  1. Open Remote Access
    You can do this in one of two ways:
    1. Go to the control strip at the bottom of the screen and click once on the icon that looks like a mac screen next to a telephone pole. Click on "Open Remote Access".
    2. Click on the Apple menu (far left on the menu bar), and pull down to Control Panels. When the menu appears to the right of the pointer, move over and click on "Remote Access."

  2. Enter your information.
    1. Make sure the "Registered User" button is selected.
    2. Enter your username in the "Name" field.
    3. Enter your password in the "Password" field. You may want to have the "Save Password" box checked for your convenience.
    4. Enter the local access number in the number field:

  3. Set up TCP/IP
    1. Go to "Remote Access" on the menu bar (Remote Access has to be active) and select "TCP/IP"
    2. Select "PPP" in the "Connect Via:" pop up menu.
    3. "Using PPP server" should already be selected in the "Configure:" menu.
    4. Type in 199.44.194.2 and 199.44.194.3 in the "Name server addr.:" box
    5. Close the TCP/IP window.
    6. Click on "Save" in the dialog box that appears.

  4. Set up the modem
    1. Go to "Remote Access" on the menu bar (Remote Access has to be active) and select "Modem"
    2. Select the appropriate port your modem is connected to in the "Connect via:" pop up menu.
    3. Select the appropriate script for the modem you are using in the "Modem" pop-up menu.
    4. You may turn sound on or off according to your preference.
    5. Select "Tone" or "Pulse" according to your phone line. ("Tone" 99.9% of the time)
    6. Close the Modem window.
    7. Click on "Save" in the dialog box that appears.

  5. Click "Connect" in Remote Access. You may now close the window. The connection will remain active until you manually disconnect (from the control strip) or your connection times out.
