Windows 95 Dial-Up Networking

If you're using Windows 98, see our Windows 98 documentation for getting online. Windows 98 installs Dial-Up Networking by default, along with the TCP/IP networking protocols needed for communicating on the internet.

You will likely need your Windows 95 installation CDROM or disks for some of the following tasks.

Internet Connection Wizard (ICW)

If you have the Internet Connection Wizard (older versions may be called "Connection Wizard"), this is the recommended method for setting up your internet account since it will automatically install whatever components you may not already have installed. This is associated with MS Internet Explorer (MSIE) and although you don't have to use MSIE as a web-browser, the Internet Connection Wizard is still very handy in setting up the necessary dial-up connection components that all internet-related programs will end up using.
If you're not sure whether or not you have the ICW, click on your Start button, then Programs and see if it's listed anywhere in the Start menu.
See our Internet Connection Wizard setup page.

Install Dial-up Networking

  1. Click on the Start button in your Task Bar, then Settings, then Control Panel.
  2. Double-click the Add/Remove Programs icon.
  3. Click on the Windows Setup tab.
  4. Click on the Communications component.
  5. Click on the Details... button.
  6. Put a check in the box next to Dial-Up Networking, then click OK.
  7. Click the OK button again.
  8. Windows 95 may prompt you for your installation diskettes or CD.
  9. Wait for Dial-Up Networking to install.
  10. When you are told to restart, click the OK button.
  11. Click the Start button and choose Shut Down.
  12. Select Restart the computer and click on the Yes button.
  13. Wait for Windows 95 to restart (may take a few minutes).

Installing networking components

  1. Click on the Start button in your Task Bar, then Settings, then Control Panel.
  2. Double-click the Network icon.
  3. Install Dial-Up Adapter
    1. If Dial-UP Adapter isn't already listed, click the Add button.
    2. Select Adapter, then click on the Add button.
    3. From the Manufactures list on the left, choose Microsoft.
    4. From the Network Adapters list on the right, choose Dial-Up Adapter, then click OK.
  4. Install TCP/IP protocol
    1. If TCP/IP isn't already listed, click the Add button. NOTE: If there is more than one Adapter installed, and Dial-Up Adapter is one of them, there should only be ONE TCP/IP associated with the Dial-Up Adapter.
    2. Select Protocol then click on the Add button.
    3. From the Manufactures list, choose Microsoft.
    4. From the Network Protocol list, choose TCP/IP, then click OK.
  5. Install Client for Microsoft Networks
This is optional, but it allows you to save your dial-up passwords so you don't have to type it in every time you connect.
    1. If Client for Microsoft Networks isn't already listed, click the Add button.
    2. Select Client, then click the Add button.
    3. From the Manufacturers list, select Microsoft.
    4. From the Network Clients list, select Client for Microsoft Networks, then click OK.
  6. Click on the Close button in the lower-right corner of the window. Within a few seconds, various files will be installed and you will be prompted to restart your computer. When this comes up, choose Yes to restart the computer.
