Windows 95 Software Updates
Important: These updates are NOT for any newer versions of Windows! Windows 98/Me/NT/2000/XP users should click on Windows Update in the Start menu.
- Clean your hard drive. Close any programs you have running and
if you have a screensaver that comes on, disable the screensaver or
keep your mouse moving to prevent it from coming on.
- Start --> Programs --> Accessories --> System Tools --> Scandisk
(choose "standard" and "Automatically fix errors")
- Start --> Programs --> Accessories --> System Tools --> Disk Defragmenter
(even if it says it's not necessary, do so anyway)
- Find out what version of Windows 95 you have by right-clicking on the
"My Computer" icon:
4.00.950 (original release of Windows 95)
4.00.950a (same as above, but has Service Pack 1 installed)
4.00.950 B (sometimes referred to as OSR 2)
- Download the following files in any order, but save them into
some temporary directory (e.g. c:\temp)
- After all files have been downloaded, disconnect from internet and close
any other applications that are running (except for Windows Explorer--so
you can run each of these files).
- Run each of these files in the following order, rebooting your computer whenever the system tells you to do so:
