RASPPPoE for Windows 98/Me
with Efficient Networks SpeedStream DSL modems

RASPPPoE is a free implementation of the PPPoE protocol available at RASPPPoE Homepage. This protocol is required for DSL connections to Network Tallahassee when using the Efficient Networks 3061 PCI and 4060 USB ADSL modems, or the 5260 without a PPPoE-capable broadband router.

This page gives information on configuring RAS PPPoE under Windows 98, Windows 98SE, and Windows ME. (Windows 95 is not supported by the Efficient Networks drivers, and therefore not covered here.) It is assumed that the Efficient Networks DSL driver has been installed and is functioning properly. See the documentation accompanying your DSL modem for installation instructions.

Windows 98SE users must have the NDIS Update for Windows 98 Second Edition installed.

Step 1: Run the SpeedStream AutoConfig

  1. This step applies only to the 3060/3061 PCI and 4060 USB modems. 5260 Ethernet users may proceed to Step 2: Install RAS PPPoE Protocol.
Double-click the Efficient Networks DSL status icon in the Windows clock tray (bottom right of your screen.)

  2. DSL Modem Diagnostics
Click on the [Autoconfig] button. You will be warned that this might delete any current settings, which for our purposes is okay. Now the driver will probe your DSL line looking for valid configurations. Normally only one configuration will be found, and automatically selected. Under some circumstances, it may be necessary to run the autoconfiguration a second time.

If autoconfiguration fails, you can manually enter these values by clicking the [Manual] button: VPI: 8, VCI: 35, Encapsulation: LLC
    Click [Save] when done.

Finished!

A dialup connection now exists for your Network Tallahassee DSL services. It will have the name of the service shown in the RAS PPPoE program window (pretty lengthy,) but you are free to rename it if you wish. You might also want to set this connection as your default dialup connection in Internet Explorer's Connection properties, or in the Internet Options in the Windows Control Panel.
